The clear contradictions of EWs mission took their toll almost immediately. The first issue hit newsstands during the second week of February, 1990, with singer k.d. lang who wouldnt come out of the closet for another two years on the cover—a figure critics labeled “offbeat,” “androgynous,” and “relatively obscure,” all coded language for “maybe gay and not Time Inc.”
