For all that, the new economics of pop make reunions a tempting proposal. The Economist recently revealed that the music industry – as opposed to the recording industry – has experienced a fairly good recession, thanks to ever-increasing live revenues. Reunited bands can make a lot more than they did first time round – especially as critically acclaimed acts have credibility to cash in. This year’s US festival darlings Pavement have been playing to crowds larger and more enthusiastic than they ever got during the 1990s, and while Pulp were a big draw in their time, their Hits collection – traditionally the capstone to a successful career – didn’t even make the Top 40.
