Living With Music: A Playlist by Rob Sheffield

4.) Rough Boy, ZZ Top. Nothing says ’80s like a lush, glossy, gauchely homoerotic ZZ Top power ballad. For me, “Rough Boy” is a song that captures what was (and still is) so exciting about this most-maligned period in pop music. ZZ Top had a perfectly safe gig as a Texas blues band, but in a music era this demented, they saw no reason not to switch on a drum machine, crank up an entire orchestra of synthesizer strings, and emote like Morrissey over rough-boy vs. pretty-boy robot romance. And the video does what it can to make the song more bizarre. Rough boys say go!
